Daylily in the Mainely Daylilies garden

About Mainely Daylilies

A passion for daylilies, grown in the heart of Maine

Our Story

This is a dream that is rapidly turning into a reality. The dream itself, to grow and hybridize daylilies of our own. The hope is that in a few years we will have come up with some original and worthy plants that we can register and introduce to the world!

My girlfriend Jenna and I started our Daylily adventure together just a few short months ago. You know, most Daylily gardens I've been in have not been located within a trailer park, but this one is. Working with the space we have, we have really focused this year on establishing new gardens and collecting new variety based on traits, beauty, genetics and timing of the blooms. Throughout the summer we turned two gardens into 5 and just keep adding more space and plants. We currently sit at 170 different variety spread across the property. We bought a few early enough to get some beautiful blooms and some crosses done, but it really picked up in September when all the orders started rolling in…..

A lifetime ago I had a garden with 200+ variety and seedlings in various stages. But I let that go years ago sadly and hadn't gardened since. Jenna bought this place and it had absolutely no gardens and a laughable "lawn" of sand and weeds. This year, the first Daylily we brought home was Ruby Spider that was always one of my favorites. More soon followed and once she started seeing the beauty and complexity of the flowers, and had her first successful cross take, she was hooked. We went to Dooley Gardens for their open gardens and the juices just started flowing. Pat Dooley is an amazing grower, hybridizer and human that taught us so much and sold us our healthiest plants we have in these gardens, and we are eternally grateful!

So now we have gardens with the best Surf N Turf compost around, filled with happy plants that we can't wait to see bloom next year. We have stayed organic throughout this process, and barring any crazy rust storm, intend to keep it that way. 150 variety that we obtained this year did not bloom due to timing of the planting, so next year is shaping up to be a big year for us.

Where this goes from here is anyone's guess. We just know we love this community and everything about daylilies and gardening, and hope to share that love and joy with others!! We're always on the lookout for new varieties to purchase or trade for and are making some amazing friends along the way. We spent all of our free time soaking up these gardens with our family. Really can't wait until next spring to see the blooms!! We really can't wait to see where this goes and are glad that you are along for the ride with us!

Happy Gardening! 💚
